RichFriend Foundation was born from lived experience. After watching our own family face the devastating effects of chronic illnesses like diabetes and kidney disease, we witnessed first-hand the power of simple, natural solutions—fresh juice, balanced meals, and nutrition education. What doctors said was impossible became reality: a mother of over three decades on insulin reversed her condition, shed 85 pounds, increased her kidney function from 6% to 23% and climbing, and reclaimed her health. That miracle became the spark for a movement.
We exist to give underserved families in Stockton and beyond the same chance at life, hope, and healing. Through fresh juice programs, healthy meal preparation, and hands-on education, we’re bridging the gap between healthcare and everyday food access. RichFriend Foundation stands for health equity, compassion, and the belief that prevention and recovery can come from the ground up—literally, from the fruits and vegetables that nourish us.
In our 5,000 sq. ft. community space, we provide practical support: distributing produce, hosting workshops, and empowering people with the tools to manage and even reverse chronic illness. Already, we’ve seen real life changes, reduced dependence on medications, and a rediscovery of energy and hope and we’re just getting started. Our vision is to expand access, serve thousands, and create a healthier, stronger community where no one is left behind because of their diagnosis.

In ZIP code 95202 (central Stockton), Black residents experience diabetes-related ED visit rates nearing 1,818 per 10,000 people, significantly exceeding both county and state averages.Default+3Calif. Water Board+3Race Counts+3
Impact: These elevated visits reflect poorly managed diabetes and inadequate preventive care access—symptoms of deeper healthcare disparities and limited resources.
Opportunity for Change: By embedding nutrition education, fresh-juice outreach, and culturally relevant support directly in these neighborhoods, RichFriend Foundation can help reduce acute crises and shift toward preventive wellness.
San Joaquin Valley—including Stockton—is one of the most polluted regions in the U.S. High levels of PM₂.₅ and smog disproportionately affect minority and impoverished areas, where poor air quality exacerbates chronic illnesses like diabetes and CKD.Wikipedia
Impact: Respiratory stress worsens metabolic health and kidney function, increasing vulnerability. Combined with limited healthcare access, these environmental factors deepen the health crisis for minorities.
Opportunity for Change: By providing nutrition-based intervention and stress resilience in polluted neighborhoods, RichFriend helps build systemic resistance—physically and socially—to environmental health threats.
Across California (including San Joaquin County), prevalence of diabetes is substantially higher in minority groups: Hispanics ~22.8% and African Americans ~21.4%, compared to much lower rates among non-Hispanic Whites.CDPH
Impact: These disparities, compounded by economic stressors, reflect how systemic inequities in food access and healthcare amplify chronic disease risk in communities of color.
Opportunity for Change: RichFriend’s culturally tailored meal programs and education can close this racial health gap, demonstrating that equity isn’t just a goal—it’s achievable through food-first strategies.
Chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are disproportionately high in San Joaquin County, ranking among the worst statewide. Chronic illnesses drive about 70% of all hospitalizations in the region, with emergency visits exceeding 1.8 million annually across the valley.sjcog.org
Impact: Continuous hospitalizations strain families and the health system—particularly affecting low-income and minority individuals who experience recurring crises instead of sustained care.
Opportunity for Change: Community-based nutrition interventions can reduce hospitalization rates by addressing root causes—like poor diet—giving real relief to families who often skip medical visits due to cost or mistrust.
